Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) offers a more secure voice and data network between sites, the benefits are a guaranteed bandwidth with lower contention ratios than that of ADSL and offers the security of guaranteed service levels .
An MPLS network can be used between unlimited sites and the network can be expanded as required to incorporate additional sites or remote workers, whether field based or fixed
MPLS defines a mechanism for packet forwarding in network routers. When doing trace routes over an MPLS or VPN network you do not see the routers that sit in between the two end points.
It was originally developed to provide faster packet forwarding because of slow IP routing over disparate networks where you have no direct control over the actual physical circuits. Improvements in router hardware have reduced the importance of speed in packet forwarding.
